West County Collector Road

2.4‑Mile Two‑Lane Rural Collector with Roundabout

Verge Civil Engineering designed and provided construction oversight for a new 2.4‑mile county collector road connecting two state highways, relieving congestion on local farm-to-market roads. The project was a high priority for county commissioners due to increasing residential traffic from new subdivisions. Zachary’s team led roadway alignment, drainage, bridge design, and traffic control planning.

  • START: 2018
  • COMPLETED: 2019
  • TAG: CONSTRUCTION, TRANSPORTATION SOLUTION
BUDGET PRICE $5,800,000

The Challenge of Projects

The alignment crossed expansive clay subgrade with a plasticity index above 40, requiring extensive soil stabilization to prevent pavement cracking and heaving. Two perennial streams required new bridge structures, and both were habitat for protected freshwater mussels, adding environmental permitting complexity. The county also requested a roundabout at the eastern terminus instead of a traditional signaled intersection.

Project Requirements

  • The pavement section consisted of 12 inches of aggregate base over lime‑treated subgrade, topped with 6 inches of hot‑mix asphalt.
  • Two 80‑foot single‑span precast concrete bridges were designed with mussel‑friendly construction windows (June through September only).
  • The roundabout included truck aprons, splitter islands, and decorative lighting per county standards.

Project Results

The road opened three weeks ahead of the aggressive 18‑month schedule, thanks to fast‑track permitting and weekend paving crews. County traffic counts showed a 40% reduction in congestion on parallel farm roads within six months. The roundabout has had zero injury accidents in its first five years of operation.
